INTRODUCTION TO LEADLIGHTING

This course is designed to give students an introduction to the art of Leadlighting and the world of Art Glass. Classes are conducted in a professional Art Glass Studio by Brenda Wood an experienced Leadlight and Glass Artist.
You will learn the fundamental principals in the craft of leadlighting. Students will be shown safe and correct methods of leadlighting including glass cutting, leading, soldering and professionally finishing a small leadlight panel. The emphasis of this course is to provide Students with professional instruction to demonstrate and teach correct methods of construction and instil confidence to further explore their glass experiences. This course is an introductory course only, giving glass enthusiasts a taste of the medium. Many facets to leadlighting require advanced instruction and further training. Upon completion of the course there is the opportunity to do an advanced course following.
The course starts with an introduction to the many facets of leadlight. The use of glass its properties and creative ways to use glass are discussed. Cartoon design is explored, tools, equipment and materials are demonstrated and discussed and studio safety addressed. Students can select a pre designed cartoon or be guided designing their own.
All materials and tools are an additional cost to students. This will vary between 90 to $150.
The following weeks students are taken through the steps of cutting glass, leading their panels, safe soldering techniques, puttying their panels and finishing off with polishing and alternative display methods.
Classes are small to ensure personal attention to your learning requirements.
Course notes are distributed at the completion of the course for reference on future projects.
On completion of this course you would have:
1. Learnt the basic skills required to create a leadlight panel
2. Leant the basics in designing a leadlight panel
3. Learnt the correct traditional methods of these skills
4. Been exposed to glass and all it can offer as a creative medium
5. Completed a leadlight panel ready for display measuring 300mm x 300mm
6. Appreciate leadlight, glass and its possibilities in a new way.
Courses run with six students at any one time.
Safe footwear is essential. Students must wear covered in shoes only. No thongs or sandals.
On the first day please bring:
Writing material as Information regarding essential paraphernalia is discussed.
Safety glasses as students will start to practice cutting glass.
Covered shoes as safe footwear is essential!
